About 3D Electronics Printing

The ability to 3D print various classes of materials possessing distinct properties enables the freeform generation of active electronics in unique functional, interwoven architectures. Our group has developed methods for three-dimensionally integrating diverse classes of materials using a custom-built 3D printer to create fully 3D printed components built around active electronics.

Advantages

  • No cleanroom required – the printing process is self-contained from start to finish
  • Can print onto and within existing devices
  • Multi-functionality achievable on a common substrate -- with flexibility in choice of substrate – and inks provide diverse functionality
  • High performance metrics achievable

Limitations

  • Cannot fabricate microprocessors, but the system can be used to pick and place integrated components
  • Single crystal performance likely not achievable
  • Manufacturing throughput currently limited
